The beauty of familiar blooming plants can be metaphors for cycles of death and regeneration, as well as beautiful remnants of human presence. Botanica reflects the gentle and annual unfolding of the past in an urban Atlanta, Georgia neighborhood.
Although the first inhabitants of this 1920s era community are gone and the surrounding skyline is punctuated by glittering postmodern skyscrapers, some of their original plantings remain. My methodology is to collect and scan plants as they emerge seasonally in the landscape. I digitally print the resulting images with pigment inks on photographic paper.
The sight and scent of these plants give a sense of connection to the neighborhood and its history. More broadly, they give a sense of place within Atlanta, a city that is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States.
